How Does a Shake Fit Into a Healthy Eating Plan?

by Frances on October 15, 2012

Most of us love shakes – I definitely do. Is healthy eating the first thought that comes to mind when we hear the word shake? Probably not – my first thought would be a big, cold milkshake. As with a lot of types of food a shake can be healthy if it is made up of healthy ingredients. Can a shake be a healthy meal? Again, it all depends on the ingredients. My family’s diet is based on balance, variety, portion control, and fitting into a busy lifestyle. A meal replacement shake fits very nicely into our healthy eating plan.

It is challenging to get all the protein, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals that our bodies need and still maintain a healthy calorie total. Variety in our healthy eating plan and focusing on whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible helps, but there can still be gaps. We do not live a physically active rural lifestyle anymore. What can we do to supplement our balanced diet?

There are a lot of answers to that question, the one I choose is a healthy meal replacement shake for breakfast and lunch. The shakes are quick and filling for an active day. We then enjoy a well-rounded dinner. What does my healthy shake include? First, it has a calorie count of 250 – 400 calories. That is just under 1/3 of a daily intake of 1500 calories. Second, it includes a combination of soy and whey protein, complex carbohydrates, and vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables. Third, it is not our sole source of nutrition – we still eat a balanced diet of whole foods for dinner and snacks.

Protecting our health in a busy schedule is an ongoing effort. Ensuring that each member of my family gets all the nutrients they need to develop, grow, and age in a healthy fashion requires a variety of solutions. Meal replacement shakes are one tool in our healthy eating plan.

Have you tried a meal replacement shake? Would love to hear from you in the comments below or join our on facebook.
