Everyone who spends much time around children has faced the question “Why?” on a frequent basis. Some days it feels like my son is on his way to becoming a master attorney as he asks a string of why and why not questions. This can be very frustrating for an adult that is trying to get a lot done in a short period of time. However, when I take a breath and think about the question it causes me to think abut the choices we make every day.
As adults, when did we stop asking why? When did we stop pushing back against the tide of “we have always done it this way”? What can we learn about the choices we are making if we take the time to ask ourselves why we are making them?
Habits and routines are a great way of optimizing how we use our time. But as our lives move on and we grow and change sometimes unconscious habits can hold us back. They can blind us to better choices.
As you move through your routine today wake up your inquisitive inner child, stop and ask why you are making the health and fitness choices you see. Discard the choices that are not working for you and implement new choices that can propel you toward a healthier life. Intentionally choose lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and lots of fruits and vegetables for meals and snacks. Deliberately schedule exercise into your routine.
As you incorporate healthier choices into your routine continue to regularly ask yourself why you are making those choices. Are they still giving you positive results or do you need to add additional healthy choices to your routine? By consistently asking yourself how well your routine is working you can avoid making blind choices that trip you up on your path to a healthier lifestyle. Encourage your inner child to resurface and make that little word “Why” work for you as a tool for developing and maintaining a healthy life.
