Decide To Maintain Your Healthy Eating Plan Through The Holiday Season Now

by Frances on November 1, 2012

Halloween is over, the trees are sporting their fall colors, and the days are getting shorter and cooler. It seems like school just started and now the holidays are just around the corner. Is the holiday season really more hectic than any other time of the year or does it just feel that way? I am noticing as the years go by that every time of the year is hectic for some reason. The same routine items continue getting done and they are surrounded by whatever season specific activities are added in.  How do we stay relaxed and focused on healthy eating amidst the holiday chaos of November and December?

When I start to feel overwhelmed the fist thing I do is take a breath – literally. This simple action, taking an extra breath, or two, helps bring the spinning chaos to a halt for a moment. It gets some extra air in my system which gives me an energy boost, lowers my stress level, and clears my head. It also gives me a chance to remember that everything will get done, one thing at a time, while we enjoy the process.

Then I look at how we have progressed toward the healthy living goals we set for our family this year. It is encouraging to see the new habits we have implemented so far and the results we have achieved.  As the temperatures cool outside some of the outdoor activities of the early fall will be replaced by indoor activities (including a little more time at the gym). However, a brisk walk with the dog around the neighborhood at least three times a week continues to be a part of the routine. We want to make it through the holidays without setting us back to the starting point. We will do this by sticking to our routine as much as possible, however, flexibility within the plan is even more important as the holiday schedule starts kicking in. Meal planning remains a crucial component to our routine. Keeping healthy ingredients in the house allows me to make quick substitutions when the schedule does not allow for the specific meal that was planned.

The final thing to remember as we start attending holiday functions is that occasionally we will slip up. When we overindulge a bit at one meal or party, we need to acknowledge that it was fun, and then get back to the regular routine the next day. Do not focus on slipping up or on what you foods cannot eat anymore. Focus on how great you feel when you stick to your healthy routine and achieve your goals.

Having a protein snack before leaving for a party helps me to not eat too many heavy party foods. How do you prepare for a healthy holiday season? Would love to hear from you in the comments below or join our conversation on facebook.
