What Inspires You to Develop Healthy Eating Habits?

by Frances on September 14, 2012

Today’s blog celebrates a family achievement and looks at what we can learn from that achievement. This weekend our family celebrated my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. How did they reach that milestone? By holding fast to a commitment to each other and maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes eating healthy, balanced meals and exercising regularly. Their achievement is a great inspiration to my brother and me.

It can be challenging to develop and maintain new healthy eating habits. Changing established patterns and routines requires focus and planning. What do we do on those days that we slip? Those days that it feels like too much effort to change? Where do we find inspiration to keep going? I do two things. First, I remind myself why healthy eating habits are important to me. Second, I look toward people I admire who have benefited by maintaining those same habits.

Healthy eating is important to me because I intend to be around to enjoy my son growing up and building his own dream. I intend to continue enjoying outdoor activities with my husband and celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary one day. I intend to have the energy to pursue all the things I am interested in. Fueling my body with the variety of nutrients it needs gives me the energy I need and helps me to age in a healthy manner. Find your own reasons to develop healthy eating habits and write them down so you can remind yourself when you are stumbling a bit.

Healthy eating habits have been modeled to me by several members of my family. My grandmother lived one month beyond her 100th birthday. She achieved that milestone by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced, healthy diet, walking every day, and working in her garden. On days when I don’t feel like exercising or eating healthy I remember her example and it encourages me. Surround yourself with people who will support your healthy eating goals so you have encouragement along your path.
