Healthy Eating Tips for Valentine’s Day

by Frances on February 14, 2013

Valentines 2013Today is Valentine’s Day and I wish you a very happy one. Valentine’s Day is fun for young and old alike – children enjoy candy and cards from friends and adults enjoy some romance. Is your first thought flowers and candy or healthy eating? I think I know the answer. How can we navigate this special day without setting back our healthy eating plan? Valentine’s Day has one important thing in its favor. It has been widely observed that feeling love or companionship reduces stress and can be good for the heart. So in this way it is a healthy holiday. If you don’t have someone close to you to share the day with treat yourself to something you enjoy.

One thing I associate with Valentine’s Day is a romantic dinner. That dinner could be at home or at a special restaurant. How can we keep that dinner healthy? Remember the basics of each meal – a lean protein, complex carbohydrate and lots of colorful vegetables. As a nod to the day include some cranberries in a salad or some beets in a vegetable medley for a splash of red.  If you have a favorite high calorie choice for the holiday remember to stick to small portion sizes.

Another fun way to celebrate the day is with a romantic activity for two (or something for the whole family). Take an evening walk or a bike ride or some other activity that gives time to talk and enjoy the company of those you care about. This activity can burn off some of the extra calories from your holiday treats and provide an excellent opportunity for calm conversation.

Lastly, in the interest of satisfying that Valentine’s Day sweet tooth – fruits and berries a a great source of healthy, complex carbohydrates. One of my favorites is strawberries dipped in chocolate – which my husband has made for me this year.

What are your favorite healthy things to eat or do for Valentine’s Day? Looking forward to hearing your comments below.
