A Healthy Day of Thanksgiving

by Frances on November 22, 2012

Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving started early in US history when the settlers recognized how fortunate they were to have started a new life even though the conditions in their new home were challenging. They wanted a time to highlight their gratefulness to God. This is still a day where we have the opportunity as a country to slow down and reflect on the many things we have in our lives for which we are thankful. It is easy to get caught up in our routines day to day and lose track of the many things we have to be grateful for in our lives. We tend to take for granted many things and people in our lives.

On this special day we offer thanks to God for our lives, our health, our families, our homes, and for struggles overcome. We express thanks to friends and family for love, support, encouragement, and companionship. We spend time with people we care about building and strengthening those relationships. We also remember all the strangers who have helped us throughout the year, including sales clerks, city services, mail delivery personnel, and many others.

Today is set aside as a special day to highlight giving thanks, but this feeling and expression of gratitude should extend to every day of the year. As we let those around us know on a regular basis how much we appreciate them our lives will grow richer and fuller. A feeling of gratefulness can reduce stress as we focus on what we have and appreciate instead of focusing on what we do not have.

I also am grateful for each of you who read this blog. I am happy to be able to provide tips and insights to help your lives be healthier.

What are you thankful for today? Would love to hear from you in the comments below or join our conversation on facebook.
